Wind Power

Wind Power

wind_turbinesInstalling a wind turbine can help offset or provide 100% of the power requirement for a property. This makes a wind turbine an environmentally friendly and economically viable solution.

Wind turbines convert wind power into electrical energy using wing-like blades which drive a generator.  A special inverter and controller converts direct current (DC) electricity to alternating current (AC).  For domestic applications either small or micro turbines are suitable.

Basic Requirements

  • Ideally try to have a clear, smooth path for the prevailing wind.  Wind speed increases with height, so turbines will give a greater output if placed at a higher level.
  • A site with an average wind speed of 10 miles per hour (a gentle breeze) is generally sufficient enough to make installing a small wind turbine worthwhile.  You can get an estimate of the annual mean wind speed for your location at www.bwea.com/noabl.
  • You will need to mount the turbine clear of obstructions that may cause turbulence.
  • Grid connection
  • Easy access will be required for erection, inspection and maintenance.

Costs and Benefits

An average house uses an estimated 4,700 kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per year. A 1.5kW turbine will produce an average of 3,942 kWh per year, saving 3,390 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year whilst a 5kW turbine will produce 13,140kWh per year saving 11,300 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.  Small stand-alone systems range from 0.6 kW to 50kW in size and roof-top models range from 0.5 kW to 2.5 kW.  The tower height of wind turbines vary with different models, but generally range from 6 to 12 meters for stand-alone machines.  In general, the turbine should be above the height of nearby obstructions that are within a distance of 10 to 20 meters of the tower heights.  The shape of the blades vary, there are many unique designs on the market.  micro wind turbines can be installed directly onto buildings, either on the roof-top or on the side of the building.

small_turbineAs approved installers of wind turbines, Energywise SW can arrange the supply, installation and support of both small and large scale wind turbines. Wind turbines can be an excellent solution for many, whether it be for businesses, farms, private homeowners, country estates or schools. Working closely with Enviko who are the leaders in the Renewable Energy Market in the UK, Energywise SW can provide the full service.

We always like to talk to our clients over the phone to discuss their requirements.  We can then recommend a suitable solution and give an idea of costs for the installation.  If the system and costs meet with your approval and you are ready to place an order we will carry out a site visit and forward you a fixed quotation.
